Traditions

Craftsmen from Europe brought their tools and knowledge of chair making here long before we were a country. Through the years they adapted their craft to local conditions and materials. What evolved was something unique to our culture – the Classic American Chair. Through the centuries that followed, many traditional designs and techniques have been lost through the economies offered by mass production. What once was an essential piece of functional furniture that lasted for generations has often been replaced by inferior quality and a “sameness” in design that lasts – at best – a few years.

Fortunately, through the efforts of a few dedicated artisans and craftsmen, the Classic American Chair is undergoing a revival. As was the case centuries ago, designs and techniques continue to be adapted to modern tools and materials. But what has evolved remains – a Classic American Chair, made with knowledge, skills and traditions that harken back to the very beginnings of this country.
